Frequently Asked Questions

What is clinical research?

Clinical research is the study of health and illness in people. It is primarily conducted to understand the safety and effectiveness of new treatments, therapies, and medical devices. Clinical research is crucial for advancing medical knowledge and improving patient care, helping researchers learn how to better diagnose, prevent, and treat diseases and conditions.
The process is highly structured and follows a series of steps, usually starting with lab-based research and animal studies before moving to human trials. Clinical research in humans often follows these phases:

  • Phase 1: This initial phase tests the safety of a new treatment in a small group of people, usually healthy volunteers, to assess safe dosage levels and side effects.
  • Phase 2: In this phase, the focus shifts to effectiveness. Researchers test the treatment on a slightly larger group of patients to see if it works as intended, while continuing to monitor safety.
  • Phase 3: In this phase, the treatment is tested on even larger groups of people to confirm its effectiveness, monitor side effects, and compare it to standard treatments. This phase is typically a key stage for FDA approval.
  • Phase 4: These are post-FDA-approved studies that further monitor the long-term effects, benefits, and optimal use of a treatment.

In each phase, rigorous protocols protect patient rights and ensure ethical standards. Clinical research also includes observational studies, where researchers gather information about health outcomes without changing any patient care, and epidemiological studies, which focus on understanding patterns and causes of health and disease in populations.
This type of research is vital for evidence-based practice, which uses data from studies to improve treatments and patient outcomes.

Eligibility and Participation

Is clinical research safe?

Clinical research is a highly regulated and safe industry. All pharmaceutical products undergo rigorous clinical trials before approval. Our work is overseen by the Office of Human Research Protection (OHRP), and our Institutional Review Board (IRB) regularly evaluates studies for safety and ethics. With decades of combined experience, our research team upholds the highest standards of safety in every study.

What is obtaining informed consent in clinical research, and why is it important?

Our staff carefully explains all aspects of the research study, including the participant's role, eligibility, privacy, and protocols, addressing any questions or concerns before participants sign the consent form. This process prioritizes safety while empowering participants to make informed decisions in their best interest.

What are my privacy rights, and will my information be protected?

As a research participant and patient, your rights are protected by the Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act (HIPAA) and further protected by our own internal robust security. All of your information will be stored in a secured manner and de-identified wherever possible for your protection. All the software we use is HIPAA compliant and ensures that your information is being stored safely. Your medical records will never be sold or given over to a third party.

Eligibility and Participation

How do I know if l am eligible for a clinical trial?

Eligibility for clinical trials is assessed according to trial-specific inclusion criteria by our trained staff. A physician investigator will make the final determination regarding your participation in the clinical trial.

When can I end my participation in a clinical trial?

As a patient in a clinical trial, you are within your rights to withdraw from the trial at any time and for any reason.

What benefits are there for participating in clinical research?

One of the most important benefits is the access to new treatments that are still under investigation for untreatable, severe and/or orphan diseases. This can be life changing for patients who have not had success with the treatments currently available.
In many cases, there will be compensation for participating in clinical research. You as a patient, and society as a whole, benefit from your participation in clinical research. Benefits extend to your loved ones and family members who may also suffer from the same condition now or in the future. The knowledge gained from your participation helps everyone with the condition being treated.

Eligibility and Participation

What if l experience a medical emergency while on the trial?

In the event of a medical emergency, please seek immediate medical attention. The trial is continuously monitored by multiple members of The Respire Institute team. If an emergency occurs, the physician investigator will determine whether to continue or end the patient’s participation. Additionally, our institutional review board will review the incident to assess if any protocol changes or study adjustments are necessary.

Who do I contact if I have questions?

Questions should be directed to the clinical research coordinator assigned at the start of the trial, who can be reached at the provided contact number. 24/7 coverage is available to ensure support throughout the study.

Will a doctor be involved in my care?

All clinical trials at The Respire Institute require a trained physician investigator who oversees all aspects of the trial from start to completion.

The Respire Institute has a network of physician investigators and a dedicated support team within our clinical research division. To continually enhance their skills, we offer ongoing training, access to educational opportunities, and mentorship to our team members. We have refined our approach to developing research-naïve physicians into world-class clinical researchers. Even experienced researchers benefit from the leadership development and skills training we provide to our entire team.
