For patients living with severe COPD or emphysema, breathing can become increasingly difficult despite medications and lifestyle changes. As the disease progresses, damaged portions of the lung can trap air, making it harder for healthier areas of the lung to function effectively.
The Zephyr valve is a minimally invasive treatment designed to address this issue by improving airflow and reducing hyperinflation in the lungs. This innovative procedure offers new hope for patients who continue to struggle with symptoms despite traditional therapies.

The Zephyr valve is a small, one-way device placed inside the airways during a bronchoscopic procedure. It allows trapped air to escape from the most damaged parts of the lung while preventing additional air from entering those areas.
By reducing pressure in the affected regions, healthier lung tissue can expand and function more efficiently. The result is often improved breathing capacity and greater tolerance for physical activity

Zephyr valve therapy is typically recommended for patients with severe emphysema who continue to experience symptoms despite optimal medical treatment.
Candidates often have significant air trapping in specific areas of the lung and may have already completed pulmonary rehabilitation or other therapies without adequate symptom relief.
Evaluation usually includes advanced imaging and pulmonary function testing to determine whether the procedure is appropriate.

The Zephyr valve is placed using a bronchoscope, a thin flexible tube inserted through the airway. Because the procedure is performed without major surgery, recovery time is generally shorter compared to traditional lung surgery.
Most patients stay in the hospital briefly for monitoring, after which they can gradually return to normal activities under physician guidance.

While the Zephyr valve is not a cure for COPD, it represents one of the most meaningful advancements available today for patients living with severe emphysema.
At The Respire Institute, our team carefully evaluates each patient to determine whether this minimally invasive therapy is the right fit for their condition and long-term care plan.
Our program has been recognized for achieving the highest number of successful Zephyr valve placements and outcomes in the Houston area. This recognition reflects the expertise of our physicians and the dedication of our care team, including our procedure coordinator Emilia Salazar, who helps guide patients through every step of the process.
Together, our goal is simple: to help patients breathe easier, regain independence, and experience meaningful improvement in their daily lives.
